How do I get a better over the air HDTV Signal?

I have a Philips HDTV antenna which lets me get over the air HDTV channels. However, some of the channels come in great (Fox), but others come in awful (CBS). What equipment do I need to purchase to let me get some of these channels better? Or do any tips exist that I can do to improve my current signal without having to purchase a new item. Go to antennaweb.org and see where the tower is for better pointing for your antenna…..I found that placing the antenna in a chair, or in an elevated place will increase the signal.
