You don’t use your tv to record anything. The tv is used to display the incoming signal from your cable company. The signal comes from the cable directly in to your VCR either by way of the cable box or directly from the wall. There are 2 ways to set up for recording. Take the wire from the wall and get a coax splitter. 1 line will go into your cable box, the other line goes into the VCR. The cable box gets hooked into your tv, and the VCR gets hooked into your tv on separate inputs. This enables you to use the VCR tuner in order to record basic cable channels that don’t require a cable box to view them. So if you want to record something on channel 23, you set your VCR to channel 23 and your set to go. This way you can also record 1 thing while you are watching something else because you can set you cable box to the channel you want to watch. This way uses the tuner in the VCR and the tuner for your cable box. The disadvantage is that you cannot record premium cable channels that would require the box to see them. The other way is to hook your cable from the wall into the cable box, the line from the cable box goes into your VCR, the VCR goes into the TV. This will enable you to record whatever you are watching on your cable box but the cable box has to be on that channel if you switch the channel in the middle it will be on the tape that way. You cannot record HD on a standard VCR. The signal is different, you will get audio and no picture, you can only record standard def signals.
