How can you figure out if HDTV channels are broadcast over the airwaves in your community?

Didgeridude asked: I’d like to figure out if there are any HDTV channels available before I buy an HDTV with a built-in tuner. I’m not willing to pay for the expensive HDTV cable or satellite packages.
