What is the best type of HDTV for me to get?
Socrates asked:
I own a PS3, my parents watch TV occasionally, and we like to watch movies. My mom has offered to buy my dad a giant HDTV. So what should we go with, plasma or LCD? I just wanted the general consensus.
LCD they will last longer than a plasma. Plasma will have better pic quality but won’t last as long. I used to work at best buy and I bought the Sharp 42 Aquas LCD 1080i has great pic quality and is great if you have HD channels on it. The sony is good too but you are paying for the name sony…
i own both plasma and LCD, and you should go plasma for sure. plasma’s lifetime falls short of LCDs but who cares, think of this way, will i be watching the same TV in 5 years, the correct answer should be NO!! therefore you should go with the plasma because of better quality features. 5 years from now TVs will have changed and you will have to get a new one anyways.
What does your dad want in a TV? What do you want in a TV?
To make a decision like this on eneeds to know what they are looking for. For instance - are you looking for long life - if so you should go with the LCD. OR - are you looking for the best picture in which case you should go for the plasma.
What about size? Can you find what you want in the size you want?
Does price come into the question - I mean - did your mom put a limit on what she is willing to spend?
The best thing for you to do - regardless of what we say here - is to list all the considerations (price, quality, size, life and any other thing you canthhink of thats important in your decision making) on a piece of paper. Put two seperate columns, one for each type, and in those colulmns answer if the tv listed meets your needs. The one with the most yes answers is the one you want to get.
Hope this helps.
Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The “inner” screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42″ is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. Plastic because it can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.
Plasma have a glass screen like all other TVs except LCDs. Both are cheap to operate depending on where you live: 3-41/2 cents/hour for plasma and 2-3 cent/hour for LCD.
Plasma is better 42″ or larger and in dark rooms or basements and for viewing sports. Most plasma brands also have anti-glare coatings. When I can get another $2000 together I will get plasma.
